NZS8157:2003 Alcohol and Other Drug Treatment Sector Standards has involved extensive collaboration between clients/tangata whai ora, alcohol and other drug service providers, practitioners, allied groups, the Ministry of Health and
Standards New Zealand.
Being broad in scope, this Standard acknowledges the unique and complex needs of those who use alcohol and other drug treatment services, and the additional specific knowledge and skills required in order to deliver a service that is
tailored to the needs of each person. It also provides a tool for judging the quality of treatment delivery and support provided for clients/tangata whai ora.
The Alcohol and Other Drug Treatment Sector Standard can be used by District Health Boards in contracts with providers of non-residential alcohol and other drug treatment services to ensure an appropriate quality of service.
The standards cover areas of:
Client/tangata whai ora rights
Organisational Management
Client/tangata whai ora engagement
Service delivery
Managing service delivery
Safe and appropriate environment.
Reasons for you to consider Accreditation:
The New Zealand Accreditation Board for Alcohol and Drug Services (NZABADS) encourage and
recognise these standards.
They set a minimum standard for Alcohol and Other Drug Services to practice.
They provide systems and processes to maximise safe service delivery.
They have been developed by the Alcohol and Other Drug sector.
The process assists you to improve what you do.
The Alcohol and Other Drug Board has approved the DAA Group to provide Accreditation to these standards. This has been done to:
Ensure a professional audit process
Ensure audits are managed by qualified and experienced auditors with health backgrounds
Ensure Alcohol and Other Drug experts are part of the audit teams
Develop deeper understanding of the needs of the services by having ongoing involvement in the
audits (approve final stage of individual's accreditation).
Reduce costs and maximise benefits.
The Certification Process
With the DAA Group your certification process follows a pathway:
Gap analysis - informal audit using NZS 8157:2003 to identify the gaps in your management
system. (Voluntary option)
Documentation review - checks the organisation has documented how it meets the requirements
of NZS 8157.
On-site audit - checks the organisation has implemented effectively what it has documented.
Follow-up - the organisation responds to corrective action requests raised during the on-site audit.
Certification - lasts for three years and is then renewed.
Surveillance - a check at 18 months of parts of the standard to ensure ongoing compliance to the
standard.
